Rikoto, J. A. and Danladi, Y. K..

Abstract
Studies were conducted to determine the prevalence of urinary Schistosomiasis among pupils of normadic fishermen, between the months of June and July 2008.Urine samples were collected from 198 subjects, analyzed using sedimentation technique and examined microscopically for the ova of Schistosoma haematobium. Ninety (90) pupils were positive for Schistosoma haematobium giving a prevalence of 45.45%. Although infections were common in males (47.10%) than they were among females (36.36%) they were not statistically significant with p-value > 0.05. Prevalence was age dependent (p-value <0.05) with higher infection rates (59.25%) among pupils within the age group of 8-10 years. At this level of infection, it was inferred that the community is endemic for this parasite and therefore the attention of the state and local authorities is needed immediately.

Key words: Bilharziasis, children, water, contact, Yauri.
