Abstract
Physicochemical properties of ground water from selected wells and a bore hole in Kalambaina, Wammako Local Government Area, Sokoto State were investigated. pH was determined by pH meter and electrical conductivity was 2+ 2+ 2+ 2+determined by electrical conductivity meter, metal ion such as Mn , Co, Pb , Ca , Ni, Mg , etc concentration were +determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) while Na+ and K concentration were determined using flame - 3-photometer and non metals ion such as Cl, NO etc concentration were determined using spectrophotometer. The result revealed that the pH (A) = 8.2±0.02, (B) = 7.8±0.01, (C) = 7.9±0.11, (D) = 8.2±0.01 and (E) = 7.8±0.12, electrical conductivity (A) = 70.9±0.01, (B) = 120.4±0.03, (C) = 78.7±0.02, (D) = 89.6±0.01 and (E) =118.6±0.11. Metal ions such as 2+ 2+ 2+ 2+ + + 2-Mn , Co, Pb , Ca , Ni, Mg , Na and K etc concentrations and Non metal ions such as Cl and NO etc concentrations were 3 2+within the r ecommended values except lead ion (Pb ) concentration which was higher, when compared with the reference table of World Health Organization (WHO). Therefore, the physicochemical properties of ground water of the samples analyzed may not affect the quality of the drinking water around the area. Furthermore, the locality may be affected by lead since its concentration was above the reference values in almost all the samples analyzed. However, further research water quality in other communities in this region is required as levels of contaminants may vary due to different soil types, water chemistry and varied human activities.

Key words: water, metal ions, physicochemical properties, water quality, contaminants.
