MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE ON THE EFFECTS OF ROW SPACING AND WEED CONTROL METHODS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF MAIZE

Abstract
This study is set out to evaluate the effects of row spacing and weed control methods on the performance of maize with respect to the grains yield, the yield of cobs and the heights. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) technique was adopted to analyse simultaneously the effects of the studied factors on the response variables. The results of the analysis shows that the effects of the three row spacing and weed control methods adopted in the experiments are not statistically significant at 0.05 levels. Within-Cell Correlations Analysis shows that height of the maize as canonical variate contributes 79% to the entire variability of the experiment and the mean yields within the cells are highly linear and more correlated among the response variables. The results of the analyses also shows that the one-weeding method-row space of 100cm and use of herbicide-row space of 75cm interactions has positive effect on the heights and yields of maize respectively.
