OUTCOME OF MISAPPLICATION OF CHEMICAL WEED CONTROL TECHNOLOGY: A REVIEW

Birnin-Yauri, A.U., Umar, S..

Abstract
This study reviewed the application of chemical products as weed control techniques with a view of highlighting the problems of these chemicals if not properly handled. Nowadays, the use of herbicides for weed control creates public concern and receives much criticism at which most naturalists and environmentalists oppose their use and, recommend organic farming methods or natural eco-friendly chemicals. It is obvious that synthetic herbicides remained widely used for weed control and intensively applied in developed and many developing countries. Some of the risks posed by herbicide use include, spray drift to sensitive crops, contamination of drinking water especially herbicides that are not biodegradable and easily leached from the surface of light soil, reduction and killing of the population of soil inhabiting organism. Compliance to application procedures as indicated on the herbicide container label was recommended as the foremost issue to be considered at the initial stage of the chemical weed control. In this report we examine the effects of mishandling of herbicides on population and ecosystem. This report is based principally on a review of the available published literature relating to effects of herbicides on population and the ecosystem.

Key words: Weeds, Chemical, Herbicide, Control, Ecosystem
