EFFECTS OF ORGANIC FERTILIZER ON GROWTH AND FRESH FRUIT YIELD OF OKRA (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench IN SOKOTO, NIGERIA

Abstract
Field trials to investigate the effect of organic fertilizer on growth and fresh fruit yield of okra ware carried out at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto Fadama Teaching and Research Farm, Kwalkwalawa village, Sokoto, Nigeria during the 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 dry seasons. Treatments consisted of three rates of organic fertilizer (an industrial organic fertilizer) (0, 1000 and 2000 kg ha-1) on Jokoso Okra variety which were laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data were collected on growth and yield parameters (number of leaves per plant, number of fresh fruits per plant, fresh fruit weight and total fresh fruit yield (t ha-1). Results obtained indicated that growth and fresh fruit yield of Okra ware lowest in control treatments, which showed that the organic fertilizer positively influenced the performance of Okra. On the average, fresh fruit of Okra was 11t ha-1 where 2000 kg ha-1 of organic fertilizer was applied and the control recorded 3t ha-1. Based on the findings of this experiment, it could be deduced that organic fertilizer promotes higher growth and yield of okra. Thus, 2000 kg ha-1 of organic fertilizer application could be recommended for growing okra in the study area.
