Abstract
The effect of salinity on biochemical parameters, ionic balance, plant growth and the arrangement of vascular tissues were evaluated in Capsicum annuum L. and Capsicum chinense Yacq. In response to varied salt concentrations. the seedlings of each species were divided into four groups, Sodium chloride (NaCl) weighted and dissolved in irrigation water to make variant concentrations of 50, 75 and 100 mM which were applied to the plants. Both species exhibited a decline in parameters, measured with increasing salt concentration. The osmolvte (G.B and Proline) increases with increasing NaCl concentration. Salinity significantly (P<0.05) increased cytotoxic ions (Na+, K+, Cl-) and affected Ca2+ in C. annum but insignificantly affected C. chinense (P>0.05). The radial arrangements of phloem and xylem were clearly noticed at control, the arrangement disorganized as the salt concentration increased. It can be concluded that the low content of proline and G.B (1.90, 1.57 µmol g-l and 1.60, 1.08 µmol g-l) Na+/K+ ratio are possible indicators of salt tolerance in both species. The effect of the salinity on the arrangement of the main conducting vessels affected the intake of water and minerals, which in turn affected the vegetative parameters, flowers and fruit quantity in both C. annuum and C. chinense.

Key words: Cytotoxic ions; NaCI; Capsicum annuum; Capsicum chinense; Salinity stress; Osmolyte
