PERCEPTIONS OF SMALL-SCALE FARMERS ON BOTANICAL REPELLENTS AS STORED SORGHUM PROTECTANTS IN SOME SELECTED VILLAGES OF KEBBI SOUTH, NIGEREIA

Abstract
A survey was conducted in five villages of Kebbi South-Nigeria to investigate perceptions of small-scale farmers on the use of botanical repellents as stored sorghum protectants in their locality. The aim was to gain a greater understanding of factors that influence choice and use of botanical repellent as grain protectant among gender. The survey involved 100 head of households (HOH), 50 each for male and female, they were selected based on a meeting organized in each of the five villages selected from Kebbi South. The HOH were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire, which was designed, based on the information obtained from key informant interviewed. The data obtained were analysed using a descriptive statistic, and chi square to test for significant association between the variables. The survey indicated that there were significant effects (P<0.01) of gender on the choice of plant materials used as grain protectants, the place of plant harvesting, the plant parts used and how they were processed. This study highlights the opportunity for improving the use of pesticidal plants as grain protectant through identification and promotion parts of the plants and methods of preparation practices by both men and women that are most efficient in providing effective protection against target insect species.
