An Experimental Investigation of the Single-Phase Pressure Drop in a Rotating Packed Bed

Usman Garba, David Rouzineau, Michel Meyer.

Abstract
Toward reducing the ratio of equipment size to production capacity, the study of fluid flow in compact and efficient systems such as rotating packed beds (RPBs) has gained significant interest. This paper presents an experimental investigation into the single-phase (dry) pressure drop in RPBs, focusing on elucidating the relationship between operating parameters and hydrodynamic behaviour. A custom experimental setup consisting of an RPB equipped with dual gas inlets and a standard, stainless steel wire-mesh packing of porosity and specific packing area of 86% and 2400m2/m3 respectively, was utilized to systematically evaluate the effects of rotational speed from 200 to 1500 rpm and a gas (air) flow rate of 100 to 350 Nm3/h on the single-phase pressure drop across the system. The results indicate that pressure drop increases with higher rotational speeds, attributed to the intensified centrifugal forces. The evolution of the pressure drop shows an almost linear profile with a slow-changing slope, increasing the pressure drop by an average of 0.51 kPa for each 50 Nm3/h increase in the gas flow rate at a given rotation speed. The findings provide a basis for enhancing energy efficiency and scaling RPB systems in industrial contexts.

Key words: Pressure Drop, Centrifugal force, Rotating packed bed, Gas flow rate, Rotation speed,
