Performance and carcass characteristics of rabbit fed diets containing varying levels of lemon grass meal (Cymbopogon citratus).

Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate the influence of dietary inclusion of lemongrass leave meal (LGM) on carcass yield, growth performance, and organ characteristics of growing rabbits. A completely randomized design was used; in which 48 weaned rabbits were randomly allocated to four dietary treatments, with four replicates in each treatment and three rabbits in each replicate. The treatments were made up of diets supplemented with T1 (0g/kg), T2 (2g/kg), T3 (4g/kg), and T4 (6g/kg) of lemongrass meal. Initial and final body weight, daily weight gain, feed intake, feed efficiency, carcass traits, and internal organ weights were the parameters assessed during the experiment. Results showed that rabbits fed 6g/kg LGM showed significantly higher (p<0.05) average feed intake, at the same time significant difference were also observed for feed efficiency across treatments. Positive numerical variations were also observed amongst carcass characteristics namely: dressed weight and back weight in the LGM-fed groups, however statistical significance were not observed in all. Metabolic and gastrointestinal improvement activity due to a significant increase (p<0.05) in the 6g/kg group for liver and caecum weights were also observed. The results from this experiment shows that lemongrass leave meal as a dietary inclusion, especially at 6g/kg, will not negatively affect rabbit health however it would optimize feed utilization efficiency and support organ development. This research therefore reinforces the use of lemongrass as an efficient feed additive in rabbit production.
