A cross-sectional study on the utilization of malaria control measures among pregnant women in primary health care centre in Ogun State

Abstract
Malaria remains a significant global public health issue, particularly affecting pregnant women due to physiological changes that heighten their risk of severe malaria-related complications. This study examined the use of malaria control measures among pregnant women attending selected primary health care centers in Ogun State. A descriptive cross-sectional design was adopted, with 87 pregnant women selected through convenience sampling, and a total enumeration method used to determine the sample size. Data were gathered using a self-administered questionnaire, demonstrating acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.841). Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests, with findings presented in frequency and percentage tables. The study revealed that most participants (98.85%) had a high level of knowledge regarding malaria control measures. Despite this, only 21.84% of respondents reported high utilization of these measures. Factors such as frequent stock-outs of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), intermittent preventive treatment (IPT) drugs, residual insecticide sprays, and mosquito repellent creams (89.6%); distance to health care facilities (83.9%); and long waiting times at health centers (88.5%) were identified as barriers to the effective use of malaria prevention strategies. Findings also indicated that there was no significant relationship between the level of knowledge and the utilization of malaria control measures. Therefore, health institutions and policymakers must identify and address the various determinants influencing the use of malaria control measures during pregnancy to develop and implement effective interventions that can increase the uptake and consistency of malaria prevention strategies among pregnant women.
