LINEAR VEGETATION AND AIR POLLUTION CONTROL: A CASE STUDY OF ROADSIDE VEGETATION IN OGUN STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract
This study investigates contribution of linear vegetation to air pollution control on Ayetoro Campus Road, Ogun State, Nigeria. Vegetated and non-vegetated sections of the road were selected for the study. Air pollution data [Nitrogen Oxide (NO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Ozone (O3)] from January to December, 2024 were downloaded from Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) repository to 300 randomly generated locations in the selected sections of the road. Data were re- processed in ArcGIS 10.3 and subjected to statistical analysis at α = 0.05. Respective temporal concentrations of CO for vegetated and non-vegetated sections of the road showed significant fluctuations, being highest in February at 0.065 ppm and 30 ppm, and least in October at 0.035 ppm and 5 ppm. Ozone concentrations in non-vegetated section peaked in February at 33 ppm and dipped in October at 14 ppm contrasting sharply to a maximum-minimum of 0.13 - 0.11 ppm for the vegetated section. Results also showed that significantly (p = 0.001) higher concentrations of NO2 (0.12 ± 0.01 ppm and CO (22.50 ± 10.67 ppm) were observed in non-vegetated than vegetated sections of the road. However, O3 concentration was significantly (p = 0.0001) higher in vegetated (24.32 ± 10.95 ppm) than the non-vegetated (0.12 ± 0.01 ppm) section of the road. This study highlights the potential of linear vegetation as a low-cost and sustainable solution for improving air quality in sub-urban communities.
