Harnessing the Medicinal Value of Ziziphus mauritania Lam: A Review of Its Bioactive Metabolites and Their Potential in Treating Chronic Diseases

Abstract
Ziziphus mauritiana Lam. (Indian jujube) is a medicinal plant known for its numerous bioactive compounds and therapeutic properties. This review summarizes research findings on the phytochemical composition, pharmacological properties, and therapeutic applications of Z. mauritiana, particularly in the treatment of chronic disorders. The bioactive constituents present in Z. mauritiana include tannins, saponins, flavonoids and alkaloids, and have been shown to possess potent antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and anti-diabetic activities. This Research explores the traditional use of Z. mauritiana in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, respiratory infections, and skin conditions, as well as its application in modern medicine. Despite its promising bioactivity, limitations in standardizing extraction processes, a lack of clinical trials, and concerns regarding bioavailability prevent it from being fully integrated into clinical practice. This study highlights the need for future research on clinical validation, advanced extraction techniques, and innovative delivery systems to enhance the therapeutic potential of Z. mauritiana.
